National Newspaper Week is Oct. 6 to 12.

Every year, during National Newspaper Week, the industry recognizes the importance of newspapers across the country and the critical role that newspapers play in an active and healthy democracy.

In markets large and small, we’re asking people in Canada to show their support by posting on social media and sharing how their local newspaper impacts their community.

We’re hoping that readers of the Optimist will join other newspapers across the country and post a photo of yourself with the Optimist (either a print copy or enjoying the Optimist online) with a message about why the Optimist matters to you during the week of Oct. 6.

Don’t forget to use the hashtags #NationalNewspaperWeek and #ChampionsoftheTruth.

Local newspapers deliver vital information and connect communities from coast to coast. In fact, four out of five people in Canada (81 per cent) read newspapers each week – either in print or digital format.

And speaking of the importance of local news, I was honoured to present a 90-minute talk and question and answer for a group of residents at ElderCollege on Friday morning, Sept. 27.

The questions were lively and afforded everyone a chance to learn a little bit more about the Optimist both in print every Thursday and how we are continuing to change and adapt to present a wide-ranging package of local, provincial, international and world news everyday on our website.

I was happy to learn that almost everyone in the room already subscribes to our daily newsletter and are regular visitors to our website.

If you have not already done so, please sign up to our free daily newsletter which arrives in your email inbox so you can stay connected 24/7, 365 days a week to the Optimist through our website.
