The lack of action regarding the George Massey Tunnel traffic problem should be a supreme embarrassment to the provincial government.
Further, both the provincial and federal governments should be looking at this problem not just as a major inconvenience to commuters but also as both a potential strategic and economic time bomb.
The tunnel handles at least one-third of the geographic area of the Lower Mainland. Just think of what would happen to the economic and social infrastructure if there were an earthquake, catastrophic accident or terrorist attack in the tunnel. The other crossings are strained.
Further, just on a medical level, last week I was stuck in traffic (because the tunnel was blocked due to an accident; what else is new?) alongside an ambulance.
What would have happened to that patient if it were a life or death emergency?
