Letters: Shop local this Christmas

So, open your wallets, take out your debit or credit card, and shop local.

Last week, I bought four Christmas presents at South Coast Casuals, a local family-run business in Ladner Village.

Originally, I got an e-mail alert from the store, advertising a dress that was on sale, so I decided to go and try it on. Some things just have to be done in person, even though I didn't buy the dress. There were two salespeople in the store with masks on, ensuring that the store was COVID-19-compliant. Lots of spraying and wiping down of displays. I was the only customer in the store at that time, which made me sad for the staff and the owners, who have tried so hard to survive since March.

While Amazon will undoubtedly thrive during this Christmas season and beyond, the Hudson's Bay may or may not do as well. But one thing is for sure, if we don't purchase items from small local independent businesses this month, then they may not be here next year for us. So, open your wallets, take out your debit or credit card, and shop local. You have two options: on-line or in person. If, in person, then stop to chat with the staff, from six feet away, smile behind your mask, and buy something. Anything. It doesn't even have to be full price. You may just make someone else's day, month, or year.

Happy Holidays.
