Letters: Don't use the new OCP and an excuse

We need to do better, and not use the new OCP as an excuse to make it someone else’s problem

Editor:

Regarding the proposed development at 4900 Central Avenue, (Optimist, Aug. 8) the developers skirt the pressing issues of housing for seniors.

In their report on Delta’s community engagement website it states, “In response to the concerns over seniors housing, staff acknowledge that this three-level townhouse design is better suited to families than seniors. However, the new OCP has designated many new areas for six-storey multi-unit development across the city that could be appropriate for a developer or provider to build a seniors housing or community care facility.”

How can this be an accepted response?

The OCP was intended to create more affordable and inclusive housing in our community.

How can council see this half-hearted response, and approve the building development?

We need to do better, and not use the new OCP as an excuse to make it someone else’s problem.
