Letters: Library should be open on Family Day

Philosophically, closing the libraries on Family Day is insupportable

A resident is suggesting that all Delta libraries should be open to the public on Family Day.

Editor:

As reported, Delta’s libraries being open on Sundays during long weekends is a positive change and presents an excellent opportunity to discuss the possibility of opening the libraries on Family Day which was founded in BC in 2013.

Philosophically, closing the libraries on Family Day is insupportable. Delta’s recreation centres remain open on Family Day, suggesting that physical activity is permissible while intellectual activity is not.

Positive impacts of opening libraries on Family Day are:

*Promotes intellectual engagement

*Supports lifelong learning

*Enhances community connection

*Encourages balanced activities

*Increases accessibility

*Sets a positive precedent for all regions to consider carefully how we chose to celebrate the day.

Overall, opening libraries on Family Day aligns with the values of education, community, and accessibility, making it a beneficial change for everyone involved.
