Letters: Misdirected patriotism

Editor:

Recently, a canvasser representing one of the provincial political parties was at my door.

I told him that this wasn’t a good place to solicit, as I was not aligned with the party’s values. This is where it got interesting.

“You’re flying the only Canadian flag on this block, so I assumed you were.”

My response was that Liberals and New Democrats are just as patriotic.

This is where I’d like to wonder why this party feels it is more Canadian. Every Canadian, political or nonpolitical, is qualified to fly the Maple Leaf.

As Canadians we cannot mimic what has happened south of us, where one party has co-opted the flag, and where there is signalling associated with flying it.

Signalling to the point that a “liberal”, or neutral inclined person is fearful of showing love of country indicates an association with the True Patriots.

The consequences of which are their friends and associates think they have moved to the far right; and the far right assumes that they are one of them.

The flag is non-political, and should be displayed with pride by all Canadians, of all backgrounds.
