Letters: Preserve the Winskill Park forest

Editor:

When the City of Delta asked for input on the new location for Winskill Rec Centre, two of the three options included demolition of the Winskill forest (my grandkids call it “The Magic Forest”). The third option reduces the number of trees by at least half. People in our community are surprised and dismayed. Planting rows of new trees here and there is no substitute for an intact, mature forest.

We would like to see a fourth option that would preserve virtually all of the forest that borders Winskill Park on the North, West and South. Winskill is currently a multi-use park, not just a sports field. Yet, instead of keeping the forest, the city’s plans include another baseball diamond. The current ball diamonds sit empty most of the time. Why not build ball diamonds in other city parks or school grounds, making them more accessible to families in other parts of town?

The removal of any substantial part of this well-used forest is a short-sighted plan that is not in the interests of current nearby residents, or the many apartment/condominium dwellers soon to join us here. The forest is a free, low-maintenance feature of Winskill Park, and one that should continue to serve people of all ages and interests.
