The Delta Police held their annual awards ceremony last week (Feb. 20) at the Genesis Theatre in Ladner, recognizing those people in the community who exemplified the department's value of honour, integrity, courage and trust.
Const. Dennis Mah received the Chief Constable Award, given for carrying out an act of exceptional courage, for risking his own life in attempting to stop a male from harming his own wife.
Const. Jason Martens received the Deputy Chief Constable Award for saving the life of a suicidal women trying to jump off the Alex Fraser bridge, as did constables Grayson Smith, Catherine Fiddick, for trying to save the life of a female drive submerged in a water-filled ditch.
Police Board Commendations were given to:
Jean Dirksen and James Ranta for their 25 years of volunteer service at the Community Police Stations in North Delta and Tsawwassen.
Sue Fabbro for her long standing commitment to the Delta Police Department and for her efforts in transitioning the Department to the new crest.
Taylor Goundrey, William Milligan, Madison Goundrey, Julia De Jong, and Griffyn Harker for their efforts in notifying police of a residential break and enter suspect, and keeping him on view until he was taken into custody by investigators.
Rob Flaman for his efforts in saving the life of a male attempting to commit suicide.
Wayne Kiland for his efforts in preventing a female from jumping off the Alex Fraser Bridge.
Kuldip Toor for his life saving efforts in intervening in a stabbing of a female
Brian Twaites for his efforts in saving the life of a male who was unconscious and in cardiac arrest behind the steering wheel of his vehicle.
Marc Cozzuol and Ashton Kobzos for their team effort in saving the life of a male who had collapsed at the Kennedy Pub.
Shane Symons and Mitchell Winter for their team effort in saving the life of a 14 year old male who was in cardiac arrest at the McDonald's restaurant in Ladner.
Constables Garth Hoffman and Jim Gravel for their commitment and dedication to the Use of Force Training Section.
Also receiving an award was Insp. Lorne Pike for his commitment to major crime investigations.
In addition to the commendations, several officers were recognized for their long service in the department.
Staff Sgt. Debbie McLeod, Sgt. Cal Traversy, Sgt. Chris Borgstede, and Const. terry Sansregret were recognized for 20 years of exemplary service.
Insp. Kaare Coupar, (Ret.) Const. Dave Winberg, and (Ret.) Const. Dan Davidson were recognized for 30 years of exemplary service.
