Re: Remember those trustees that voted to close schools, letter to the editor, Nov. 16

I'd like to extend my appreciation to letter writer Carol Mackenzie for providing us with the names of the Delta school trustees who voted in favour of school closures. I, for one, will use this as a checklist of trustees which I will support in the upcoming election.

The Delta school board has a responsibility to manage the district assets and funds in a prudent and responsible manner so as to ensure adequate resources are available for all students in the district.

By closing underenrolled schools and consolidating those students to more active schools, the board gained operational efficiencies and reduced costs.

The money saved by these measures no doubt went to support vital programs in facilities whose own viability and vibrancy were enhanced by the influx of students from the closures.

No one wanted to see the program cuts that would have been necessary to keep these schools open. The school closures avoided these cuts and yet imposed very little in the way of hardship on the affected students.

In this harsh economic climate where every penny counts, I'm particularly grateful to these trustees for making the tough decisions needed to keep our school system in the black and urge them to continue to do so.

My thanks (and vote) go to Dale Saip, Simon Truelove, Brenda BennettSchneider, Laura Dixon and Janet Shauntz.
