The City of Delta is holding a public information on the design of a proposed new multi-use pathway in Ladner.
The session at the Ladner Community Centre on May 16, starting at 5 p.m., will be an opportunity to provide input on a new pathway along River Road from Ferry Road to Elliott Street.
The pathway is part of the city’s annual cycling infrastructure program and aims to improve the connectivity between Ladner Village and Marina Gardens.
The project includes a new three-metre-wide multi-use pathway along the north side of River Road as well as street lighting improvements.
Construction is scheduled to tentatively start in summer 2024.
Last December, the city issued a request for proposals for the design and construction of a new multi-use pathway along the west side of Elliott Street from 47A Avenue to Chisholm Street. The detailed design was scheduled to be completed this spring.
An integral part of the City of Delta’s new Cycling Master Plan, multi-use pathways are off-street paths that are physically separated from vehicles. They provide sufficient width to be used by people walking, cycling and other forms of active transportation such as in-line skating and jogging.
Multi-use pathways can have paved or unpaved surfaces, but paved or firm surfaces are often preferable for people cycling and people with mobility aids or strollers.
Members of the TFN Delta HUB cycling group made a presentation to council last year to outline gaps and a wish list of priority improvements in the city’s cycling network, including 44th Avenue in Ladner.
As far as multi-use pathways, the group requested increased use of what they describe as simpler and cost-effective cement barriers in areas with little no pedestrian usage.
