As the weather cools down and the holidays approach, Earthwise Society continues to offer fun and interactive workshops at the Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay.
For those who prefer to learn from the comfort of their own homes, Earthwise is offering a new virtual learning series that will inspire creativity while keeping you connected throughout the colder months.
From wacky winter veggies to beeswax candles and wreath making, read on to discover how you can learn something new and meet others from the warmth of your living room.
Do you love winter squash, but have often wondered how to prepare them, or what the differences are between them? Register for The Wonders of Winter Squash Zoom workshop, held on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 2 p.m. Learn about all the varieties of squash grown at Earthwise, how to grow them, how to properly prepare and cook them, and discover some new delicious recipes featuring squash!
The Bee-autiful Beeswax Gifts Webinar, held on Dec. 15 from 1 to 2 p.m., will discuss the many uses of beeswax, how it is extracted from the hive, and the benefits of using it for candle making and salves. Participants will be asked to drop by the Earthwise Garden and to collect kits, which will contain the supplies for four-rolled taper beeswax candles, a pre-made herbal salve, and a jar of local honey. Then, they will tune in via Zoom, where they will learn how to make the candles, and a recipe for a soothing, warm drink featuring honey.
If you’re looking for a way to bring the holiday season to your dining table, join in the Festive Table Wreath webinar, held on Wed, Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. Drop by the Earthwise Garden and collect your wreath kit, which will come with the supplies and fresh greenery needed to make a cheerful table wreath at home, then tune into zoom and learn how to assemble them. Add your own decorative touches! For those who can’t attend the Zoom session, each kit will include detailed instructions so that you can create your masterpiece at your convenience.
After a short break for the holidays, the virtual learning will continue on Tuesday, Jan. 11 from 1 to 2 p.m. with a Weird Winter Veggies webinar. Have you ever tried Jerusalem artichoke, kohlrabi or rutabaga? Have you always wondered what to do with veggies like this, and how they are grown? Join Earthwise on Zoom and explore the wild world of weird winter vegetables! Learn about some of our favourite unusual crops, how to grow and prepare them, and share creative recipe ideas.
Advance registration for these workshops is required and material costs may apply. The beeswax supply kits can be picked up from the Earthwise Garden Dec. 8 to 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the wreath kits can be collected on Dec. 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
