Val Pereira is once again raising money for cancer.

He's organizing the third annual Century Cuts for Cancer, set for next Friday at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, and has a goal of reaching $10,000.

Cancer has hit close to home for Pereira, 54, a member of Century Group's maintenance department.

"I've lost five family members altogether. I lost my best friend last week. I buried him last week," he said.

They grew up together, went to school and served in the army together back home in Portugal.

Proceeds from next week's head shaving event will go towards the Canadian Cancer Society.

There were 19 participants signed up as of this week.

The fundraiser takes place Friday, June 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Figaro Hair Design at the Town Centre Mall. The shave off starts at 11 a.m.

Mayor Lois Jackson and MLA Vicki Huntington will be attending, he noted.
