It doesn’t happen in June, during Pride Month, but that’s OK if the Delta Pride Picnic schedule doesn’t match perfectly.

Because the picnic, now marking its sixth year, will offer a full afternoon of entertainment and will take place later in the summer, on Sunday, Aug. 18, in Memorial Park, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Every year, it’s grown and gotten bigger and better, which is really wonderful,” said Christa Horita Kadach, with the Delta Pride Society.

Last year, the event drew more than 500 people, while this year, attendance should be larger.

Seeing the event grow is a positive sign but it also means that’s it needed by more people as well, said Horita Kadach.

Events and times are still being confirmed but there will be lots going on.

Food trucks will be there, because it is a picnic, art vendors, as will resource tables and tents, to aid in a variety of areas. Organizations such as QMunity, Pflag, Sher Vancouver will be present as well.

Horita Kadach said the picnic is different from other pride celebrations.

“This really started as a picnic because the people who started it had young children and it’s continued to be geared for all ages, including families with young ones.”

People can bring their own picnic basket and there’s entertainment as well on the stage.

But the booking process is just beginning so dates and performers remain to be confirmed.

“We always have live music. We always have … dance. And we always have other performers as well.”

Arts and crafts, face painting, games, colouring and beading will be available as well as an accessible tent area for those who need more space for wheelchairs and seating for seniors.

As well, there will be a Chill Zone, a bit farther from the stage, to give some quieter space.
