DSS students' fundraising efforts on behalf of Reach given a boost

TFN Construction and Matcon Civil Joint Venture donate $2,000 to cause

A group of Delta Secondary students was recognized for its fundraising efforts and awarded a $2,000 donation towards Reach Child and Youth Development Society by Tsawwassen First Nations Construction and Matcon Civil Joint Venture.

Students Taylor Baker, Christine Whitty, Amber Hastings and Cody McGill chose Reach for a school fundraising project in honour of Baker's younger brother who has autism.

The students visited the Reach Preschool in Ladner and learned about the programs Reach has for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

For their project the students developed a presentation and video that captured their experience with the children and included information on Reach.

Renie D'Aquila, executive director for Reach Child and Youth Development Society, invited the students to be recognized at Reach's annual general meeting.

"We feel that the work these students have done is inspiring and should be recognized," said D'Aquila.

Norman Stark, president of the TFN Economic Committee, presented Baker with the cheque at the event.

"We believe that an organization like Reach is really important in the community, and we believe that every young person that comes into this world brings in some special gift. We all need to help them realize their potential. We are really pleased to see the work that Taylor has done and we hope the young people will see her as a role model."

The donation will go towards Reach's $4 million Building for Children Together capital project to build a community-based child development centre in Ladner.
