TAG – you’re it!
North Delta’s George Mackie Library re-introduced TAG (Teen Advisory Group) after an almost three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
More than 100 teens aged 13 – 19 showed up for the first meeting on Oct. 6.
“We’re meeting a need in the community. Teen Advisory Groups provide the opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours students require for graduation,” says Minakshi Sidhu, Community Librarian and TAG Group organizer.
Thirty hours of volunteer or community service is one of four possibilities suggested in the BC Graduation Program Policy Guide to fulfill the career-life exploration requirement for a Career Education component. TAG members accumulate credit as they attend meetings or volunteer; one credit for every hour.
Teens support the George Mackie Library by volunteering their time and energy to help library staff with teen-oriented programs and services, including assisting at library events. Members act as library representatives in the North Delta’s teen community.
TAG elections were the topic of their first meeting.
The TAG president, vice-president, and table officers will be elected on Thursday, Nov. 3, to serve for a one-year term.
“There is a lot of interest in the upcoming TAG elections. I get emails every day asking about the procedures and how they can either be nominated or nominate someone else for a position,” added Sidhu.
Teen Advisory Groups build community. They foster goodwill, provide volunteer opportunities and develop future public services users and funders. They also provide leadership, work experience and much more.
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month (Nov. 3, Dec. 1) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the George Mackie Library.
If there are significant events that require additional attention, members may meet more frequently. North Delta teens are encouraged to join.
