A group of local women is hosting a public skate at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Sunday to fundraise for an upcoming trip to help orphaned children in Africa.

The ladies are volunteers with the Watoto Mission Group that helps build villages in Uganda. Betty-Marie Mason-Fryer is one of three adults, along with five youth, who will be leaving Delta in July to help build a house for orphans in the northern village of Gulu.

"One house accommodates eight orphaned kids and one house mother," says Mason-Fryer.

She adds that Watoto hires local villagers to help with construction of the homes, which creates jobs within the communities.

The volunteers will also be helping out in the baby orphanages while in Uganda.

"They need help loving and caring for the babies," says Mason-Fryer.

The women are hoping the family ice skate, which will run from 2 to 4 p.m., will raise at least $2,000 to put towards travel expenses, construction and baby supplies.

Admission is $5 per person or $20 per family, with hot chocolate and goodies available by donation.
