Are you itching to get out in the garden?

Join presenter Rhiannon Johnson at any one of her gardening programs offered at both Tsawwassen Library and Ladner Pioneer Library. There is also a program for kids.

She has been teaching gardening classes such as organic gardening, soil health, and seed saving at community centres, neighbourhood houses, and community gardens for nine years, delivering more than 30 workshops in a year.

A lifelong gardener and green thumb with a Bachelor’s in Biology and a Masters in Environmental Engineering, she brings her passion for teaching into her hands-on workshops to inspire and give beginning and seasoned gardeners the information they need to have a healthy and flourishing garden.

Want to grow food but haven’t much room? On Monday, April 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Johnson will cover the techniques and challenges specific to gardening in small spaces in balcony container and small space gardening at Tsawwassen Library. She will discuss soil, fertilizing organically, watering, types of containers, different sun orientations and what to grow in your space to maximize your garden’s yield.

Enjoy the taste of freshly grown veggies from your garden this season.

Register for May planting for summer veggies on Monday, May 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library. Mid to late spring and early summer are busy times in the garden, and there are a lot of plants you can seed directly. Whether it’s on your balcony, in your yard or community garden plot, learn what to plant now and how to plant properly. Discover the knowledge to plant, grow, and harvest vegetables such as peas, beans, greens, beets, the onion family, root veggies, herbs, tomatoes, and carrots starting now.

What better way to learn about plants than by “playing in the dirt.”

Playing in the dirt on Wednesday, May 3, from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Library, offers children a hands-on activity of planting seeds or seedlings into a pot. Take the pot home so your child can continue to discover all the wonders plants offer. This program is suitable for ages two to nine.

The Ladner Pioneer Library will be offering the same program on Thursday, May 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages five to 10. Please meet at the gazebo in Memorial Park.

Johnson will instruct you on how to compost and make great dirt on Tuesday, May 9, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Compost is a valuable addition to your garden, rich in nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. Beginners and experienced composters welcome! Learn how to start composting, optimize your composting setup, reduce your effort, and produce free compost year-round. Topics include starting your compost pile, maintaining it, different composting systems including worm composting, and leaf mulching. Please bring a container of your current compost so we can all learn from each other’s stages of compost.
