Ladner residents are seeing the transformation of a beat-up old track transform into a new facility the community can enjoy outside Delta Secondary.

Work is well underway on the $5 million track replacement project in collaboration with the Delta School District. Construction began in June and is scheduled for completion by this November.

The construction involves the installation of a modern synthetic running surface, offering enhanced durability and performance for athletes, and more uses, while the natural grass playing field will undergo upgrades, including advanced drainage and irrigation systems to ensure optimal playing conditions year-round.

Long jump runways will also be installed to accommodate para-athletes, fostering inclusivity and accessibility.

The city also noted that to enhance community access in the evening and early morning, pedestrian lighting will be installed around the track perimeter. As well, pedestrian connections from 45th Avenue to the track and the adjacent Memorial Park will be expanded, promoting connectivity and accessibility.

The grass infield will be open to the public by February 2025.

In May, the city also celebrated the groundbreaking for the new second artificial turf playing field at Mackie Park in North Delta.

The City of Delta, meantime, is planning to offer sport development workshops aimed at supporting local sport organizations.

The city has also started a survey to hear back from groups on their current needs that they would like to see discussed at the upcoming workshops.

As part of a sports field review initiated earlier this summer, the city also launched a survey to gathering input from representatives of user groups.
