The man convicted of killing a Delta police officer more than 35 years ago was denied full parole earlier this year.

Elery Long, now 66, is serving a life sentence for the murder of S/Sgt. Ron McKay.

In 1974, McKay, 47, went to Long's Tsawwassen home to investigate a public complaint against the local biker, who was well known to police. Long opened his front door and shoved a sawed-off shotgun into the officer's stomach. A number of young police officers looked on in disbe-lief as the senior officer, with his hands in his pockets, was shot. Long was convicted of first-degree murder in May 1975 and sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to a life in prison.

Long has been released, either on full or day parole, and been sent back to prison several times in recent years, but has been out on day parole - with no issues - since December 2009.

The parole board cited concerns about Long's insight into the offence, given the length of his incarceration, as well as ongoing issues with authority figures and a number of other concerns in denying full parole.
