CUPE ratifies contract

Delta council to vote next week

Delta and CUPE Local 454 are one step closer to having a new contract in place for municipal employees.

On Wednesday night, the union membership ratified the tentative agreements reached last month with the Corporation of Delta and the Delta police board.

The agreements must now be approved by Delta council and the police board.

Delta chief administrative officer George Harvie said the tentative agreement will go to civic politicians at an in-camera meeting next week for ratification. The police board will consider the agreement some time in the coming weeks. The police board agreement with CUPE also needs Delta's approval.

While the details of the tentative agreement cannot be made public until it has been ratified by both sides, Harvie did say last month that it falls within the man-date that was set out by council.

As well, in a statement posted on the union's website last month, president Darryl Robison said the settlement is consistent with agreements that have been reached in other Lower Mainland municipalities.

Agreements reached last year in New Westminster and Vancouver both were four-year contracts that provide 6.75 per cent wage increases.

The agreement came after several months of negotiations that saw the union, which represents more than 850 civic employees, including civilian workers at the Delta Police Department and Delta Museum and Archives employees, file for mediation last month.

Delta's unionized workforce has been without a contract since the end of 2011.

Delta negotiated directly with its employees after leaving the Metro Vancouver Labour Relations Bureau.
