Driving on damp or icy roads can be dodgy at best but add speed to the mix and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Delta police say online that early Monday they stopped a driver who had only a learner’s Class 7 licence, doing 166 kilometres per hour on Hwy. 17, more than double the 80 kmh limit.

Road conditions were described as slippery, with freezing temperatures.

“At those speeds, the risk of serious or fatal collisions increases dramatically,” Delta police said. “Speeding is a choice that puts everyone on the road in danger.”

Police seized the vehicle for seven days and slapped the student driver with $483 ticket.

Delta traffic cops also collared the driver of a rental vehicle doing 110 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, on Nordel Way.

The vehicle also was impounded for seven days, meaning the driver had to pay the storage for a week, plus the vehicle rental charges for another week as well. In addition, the driver was given $368 ticket.
