Delta fire investigators continue to pour over the charred remains of a two-alarm fire that consumed a greenhouse in East Delta Sunday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at Canopy Growth’s former Delta growing facility in the 10200-block of Hornby Drive at 7:30 a.m.
This was after an initial response from Delta police, who noticed smoke coming from the area.
Deputy fire Chief Guy McKintuck said that once firefighters arrived on scene, the call was changed from a first alarm to a second alarm, so seven apparatus were dispatched.
“So that was approximately 30 firefighters,” he said. “It was reported that the area of origin was a shipping/receiving area of the greenhouse.”
He said the structure contained cardboard material and a diesel generator and that no chemicals or fertilizers were inside the burnt-out structure.
There was also no reported injuries to firefighters and no one was inside the building.
Thick clouds of heavy black smoke were reported across the Lower Mainland as firefighters worked well into the morning to contain the blaze.
Around 11 a.m., McKintuck said some crews were removed from the area and put back into regular service at their respective departments.
Fire investigators were on scene throughout the week looking to determine a cause, which as of press time Wednesday, was still undetermined.
Delta Mayor George Harvie praised the work of the department in containing the blaze so quickly.
“Our crews were outstanding as always,” said Harvie. “It also showed the benefit of the council of the day, approving the Boundary Bay Fire Hall because that gave a much quicker response and makes a huge difference in firefighters fighting a fire of this nature.”
The building, owned by Canopy Growth, has sat empty since the company closed its Delta-based facility in March.
Calls into the company for comment on the fire and investigation were not returned by press deadline Wednesday morning.
