It’s always a good time to have a picnic, especially on a Sunday, in the middle of summer.
The Delta Pride Picnic is this Sunday, Aug. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to the event, which will feature games, activities, entertainment and resource booths.
Christa Horita Kadach, Delta Pride Society vice-president, says the event has expanded in the four years since it started.
“It’s grown quite a bit this year. We have quite a few more people involved,” said Horita Kadach.
This year, there will be 10 entertainment acts, compared to three last year, while the Delta show stage will be used to improve the production.
In addition to entertainment, vendors, resource booths and the Skye Thai food truck will be on site. Four Winds Brewing is continuing its Delta Pride Picnic Baskets, which can now be bought online and picked up at the picnic.
Boca Grande is making special pride donuts just for the picnic.
Entertainment includes Joel Eddington, magician, the Darcy and Jer comedy team, the Waackingdom Dance Troupe and six drag artists.
The society now has seven board members and membership has grown.
“We never know how many will show up and every year it gets bigger,” Horita Kadach said.
The picnic takes place after two recent incidents of vandalism to pride flags, one in July at Ladner United Church and one on June 21 at City Hall.
But the city, community groups and politicians have responded, Horita Kadach said.
“The City of Delta has been incredibly supportive. Those kinds of negative acts of hate just always bring out more allies and people speaking out and more people stepping up to support the community,” Horita Kadach said.
