Delta will be down to one Safeway store in a couple of months.
That’s thanks to the Ladner store at Tenant Park Square set to close its doors July 13 for conversion into a FreshCo grocery store outlet.
Sobeys Inc. earlier this year announced the locations of its first several FreshCo locations in B.C. which includes the conversion of the Ladner location.
The reopening date for Ladner hasn’t been announced, other than the store will be closed for four-to-five months before opening again under the new brand.
Sobeys, which is owned by Empire Company Ltd., owns, or franchises several grocery chains, including Thrifty Foods, IGA, Price Chopper, FreshCo and Foodland.
Five years ago, Sobeys sold the Tsawwassen Safeway to the Overwaitea Food Group. That means the Safeway at 64th Avenue at Scott Road in North Delta will remain as the only Delta location once the one in Ladner changes.
There's no word if the North Delta Safeway is to also eventually convert
Meanwhile, several Safeway stores that had been closed down by Sobeys are gradually reopening as FreshCo including, soon, the store at Strawberry Hill down the street from the North Delta Safeway.
A Mission FreshCo was recently the first of 12 locations that opened in Western Canada. Richmond’s two new FreshCo locations opened last week.
