Delta throwback: Kinsmen in the community

The local chapter of the Kinsmen Club received its charter on June 1, 1936 with the Chilliwack Kinsmen Club acting as sponsor.

The funds raised through the club’s many events were directed to community services and construction projects such as the building of the first health centre in Delta, the Kinsmen Pioneer Library, Kinsmen House and the Kinsmen Water Park in Ladner’s Memorial Park.

Let's go back to Ladner in 1950.

This photo shows four volunteers installing a Kinsmen signpost.

The Ladner Kinsmen Club received its charter in 1936 and its first president was George F. Maxwell.

The club originated from an idea of young Ladner businessmen the year prior. They were looking to create an organization that would promote a sense of community.

So, in March of 1936, the group signed on to join the Association of Kinsmen Clubs of Canada.

In 1972, the club changed its name to Kinsmen Club of Ladner-Tsawwassen.

They supported numerous projects over the decades including the opening of the new library in Ladner in the early 1960s.

The Kinsmen Club of Ladner-Tsawwassen continues to raise funds for the Kinsmen Community Support program.

Some of the beneficiaries over the years include Reach Child and Development, KinVillage, Delta Hospital, Christmas hampers, Delta Sundancers Teen Dance Club, bursaries to South Delta and Delta secondary schools, Kinsmen Foundation of BC, Cystic Fibrosis – BC, BC Special Olympics – Delta Branch, McKee Seniors Society and the Delta Housing Be Mine Society.
