Let’s head back to April 1974 when Delta Council wanted the return of harness racing at Paterson Park.
Racing ceased operating at the site a few years earlier, but Mayor Tom Goode called for a return, at least on a short-term basis until another permanent site in Delta could be found.
“It is a sport that is dear to my own heart, and I’m sure to a lot of other people,” he said.
Goode suggested a new site could be located somewhere near a freeway for easy access.
Council agreed with his suggestion to set up a special meeting with the Delta Agricultural Society, owners of Paterson Park.
A motion was made to refer the matter to a committee consisting of the mayor and two alderman, who would hold meetings with all concerned parties.
Alderman Ernie Burnett said “shame, shame” about Delta no longer hosting races.
The site remains vacant. There are no development plans on the horizon by the city, which now owns part of the site with Kwantlen university owning the remainder.
