Let’s head back to September 1971 when a pair of business grand openings were celebrated in Ladner Village.
From Sept. 16 to 18, the Red Caboose and the OK Tire Store on Westham Street gave out hundreds of prizes, free food and even had free baby elephant rides.
The Red Caboose actually opened a few weeks earlier.
Owner Gordy Toombe said he and his wife Kathy were excited when they first heard of the restaurant chain that started in Eastern Canada, adding their establishment had already become very popular with Ladner teenagers.
Gordy had been in the communications field for 16 years before taking on the new venture.
Located next door, Wayne Badger’s new OK tire store was formerly called Target Tire.
