Delta to get feedback on reimagined wharf design

The City of Delta will begin community consultation on a re-imagined Chisholm Street Wharf design.

Council this week endorsed sending a proposed concept for public feedback, a design that includes, among other features, a glow-in-the-dark accessible pathway and catenary lighting over the wharf and dike pathway to transform an otherwise dark public space into a welcoming space in the evening.

The conceptual design also has space for a semi-permanent food container and food trucks, as well as utility services and picnic tables.

A report to council says the preliminary community feedback this summer on ideas to revitalize Ladner Village and the waterfront was very positive when it comes to upgrading the wharf.

Survey participants expressed excitement about the space along Chisholm Street, which has undergone repairs, supporting year-round use by hosting community events, live music and festivals, as well as improving accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

If supported, detailed designs will be completed and tendered to complete the project by spring 2026.

The report also notes that $2.5 million had been set aside to support the Ladner Waterfront Revitalization project including wharf surface improvements and upgrades to Spot-on-the-Water Park.

The 2024 funding included $412,000 from an estate bequest to support accessibility upgrades on the wharf.

However, elements of the project have been added, such as lighting, furniture, shade, mist and utilities, to support food service, that were not included in previous budgets. As a result, the project would be re-budgeted into the 2025 Capital Plan using carryover funds, plus an additional $2 million that has been identified through a revision to a Development Cost Charge Bylaw which supports parkland enhancements and trail expansion in the Ladner area.
