Tsawwassen residents can’t head south right now for cheap gas in Point Roberts but a trip 10-minutes north these days can at least save a few dollars.
Gas prices in Ladner, especially one particular location, have been significantly lower of late, compared to other stations in the city.
On Sunday night, the price for regular unleaded at the Tsawwassen Chevron was $1.56.9 per litre. Meanwhile, it was going for $1.44.9 at the Ladner Chevron.
Some residents have reported an even greater discrepancy between the two stations, an issue that has been buzzing the past few days on local social media pages.
According to Gas Buddy head of petroleum analyst Patrick Da Haan, customers should take advantage of the Ladner Chevron prices while they can as it’s the driving force behind the savings at the pump.
“It looks like most stations even in Ladner aren't matching the one Chevron,” said Da Haan. “Clearly, that Chevron is an abnormality, and I'm not sure what their reasoning or strategy is, nor can I get in their head and understand why they may be selling so low compared to others.
“Often stations may do this to get attention. But it's all about competition, perhaps the station owner thinks he can lower their price to gain traffic and do better.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, regular unleaded was up to $146.9 at the Ladner Trunk Road location but that was still cheaper than any station in Richmond ($152.9), South Surrey ($152.9) and even Langley ($151.9).
It was last June, when the completely renovated Ladner Chevron re-opened with a Triple O’s and a Town Pantry convenience store.
