Friday night windstorm leaves thousands in Delta without power

BC Hydro reporting seven outages in the city impacting over 6,000 customers

An intense windstorm Friday night has resulted in power outages throughout the city including a large section of Ladner.

An intense windstorm Friday night has left over 6,000 B.C. Hydro customers in Delta without power.

The south region has so far been hit the hardest where Environment Canada is reporting a sustained wind of over 70 km/h and gusts peaking at 103 km/h.

It’s resulted in a large section of Ladner — north of 34B Ave, east of 45A St., west of 66th street and south of 52nd Ave. —  without power, impacting 3,900 B.C. Hydro customers.

Meanwhile, Tsawwassen is also dealing with at least one significant outage — west of 54th St. And south of Sea Salish Way — leaving another 2,200 customers without power.

As of 11 p.m., B.C. Hydro is reporting seven outages in the city. No word yet on when the power may be back on.

Overwhelmed work crews are dealing with 940 outages in total in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast, affecting 144,720 customers.

The winds are expected to ease in the next couple of hours.
