As demolition continues to pave the way for several development projects in Ladner Village, several residents are taking to the streets to protest those projects and the way that Delta council has handled them.
On Tuesday afternoon, Friends of Ladner Village were out on Delta St. and Bridge St.
The group had planned another march and rally for Friday, but due to the impending winter weather, have tentatively planned a follow-up rally for Saturday.
Spokesperson Bev Yaworski said in a news release that the protests are being held to highlight residents’ concerns about the mass demolitions and loss of heritage character in Ladner Village disguised as “revitalization and luxury hotel and condo redevelopments.”
“None of the developments are proposing any type of desperately needed affordable housing,” she said. “The demolitions are also displacing long-time Ladner businesses.
“We’ve lost trust and confidence in our council’s ability to act on behalf of the best interests of all Delta residents. With Delta’s fast-tracking of the Official Community Plan, council’s elimination of the public’s question and answer sessions and repeatedly holding closed council meetings - which shut out and hinder transparency and community input, we are forced to take our message to the streets.”
