Only two Delta high schools cracked the top 100 in the Fraser Institute's latest high school rankings.

The Fraser Institute this week released its controversial annual rankings of B.C. high schools.

The Report Card on British Columbia’s Secondary Schools, 2020, ranked 252 public and independent secondary schools based on six academic indicators, using student results from annual province-wide exams, grade-to-grade transition rates and graduation rates.

Independent schools once again were in the majority when it comes to the top ranked in the province.

In Delta, the private Southpointe Academy ranked 12th overall out of 252 B.C. high schools.

As far as public schools, Delta Secondary ranked 107th, while South Delta Secondary ranked 181st.

Meanwhile, Burnsview Secondary ranked 98th, North Delta Secondary ranked 191st, Seaquam ranked 107th, Sands ranked 122nd and Delview ranked the highest at 82nd.

“Parents should use this Report Card every year to see how their child’s school is doing, and if necessary, ask the principal how he or she plans to turn things around,” said Peter Cowley, senior fellow at the Fraser Institute, in a news release.

The B.C. Teachers Federation and school boards have long dismissed the rankings, saying the reports don’t offer a complete picture of schools.
