Ladner Village toilets to be tucked away

Picnic tables are to replace the toilets on non-market days.

The portable toilets that have been a constant part of the Ladner Village landscape are now only coming out for special occasions.

Mayor George Harvie, during Monday’s council meeting, told city manager Sean McGill that a number of businesses have complained about the toilets, asking that they only come out during special events including the Ladner Village Market.

McGill said the toilets would be moved this week, either being stored on property behind MLA Ian Paton’s office or tucked away in the vacant lot next to the post office.

McGill also agreed that the city should install additional picnic tables in the area where people can sit and relax.

The city last week announced that it has entered into an agreement with Ladner Village Market Ltd. to assume the assets and operation of the Ladner Village Market for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Meanwhile, Harvie also requested staff to look into adding additional amenities, as well as remove several trees that are blocking views of the waterfront, at the public space created on Chisholm Street following the demolition of the former Seven Seas building. McGill agreed to look into how to make the space even “more engaging” for residents.
