A study commissioned by Metro Vancouver last year indicates that to meet future EV charging needs, Delta will require approximately 58 public DC Fast Charge stations by 2035.

Delta council has approved a licence agreement between the city and BC Hydro for the use of 11 parking stalls at the Delta Sports Development Complex in Ladner for the installation of 10 direct current (DC) Fast Charge electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

BC Hydro is expanding its network of DC Fast Charge stations throughout the province.

BC Hydro currently owns and operates four DC Fast Charge stations at South Delta Recreation Centre, under a licence agreement with the city.

Council this spring approved a licence agreement with BC Hydro for eight DC Fast Charge stations at Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta, which are planned for installation later this summer to align with the Sungod parking lot rehabilitation project.

BC Hydro has identified the Delta Sports Development Complex as an ideal location for more.

A report to council notes that staff has negotiated a licence agreement for the use of 11 parking stalls for the installation of the 10 stations.

Eleven are required to ensure that two of the charging station stalls will have a wider width to accommodate accessibility design standards.

Installation and maintenance costs for the chargers are borne by BC Hydro, while Delta makes the land available for no cost.

The report adds that growing the EV charging network is a recommendation in Delta's Electric Vehicle Strategy and Delta's Community Energy and Emissions Plan.
