The design, manufacture and installation of a new synthetic turf system, complete with infill material and shock pad, are to accommodate 3,000 hours of organized sport-related use per year.

The City of Delta has issued a request for bids for a contractor to provide a complete synthetic turf system for the new synthetic turf field between the existing synthetic turf field and Gray Elementary School at Mackie Park in North Delta.

The project involves the supply and installation of the new field surfacing system, complete with shock pad and infill material.

A contract for the civil works of the synthetic turf field has already been awarded and substantial completion of those works is anticipated by the end of November 2024. The target completion date for the installation of the synthetic turf system is March 14, 2025.

One of the city’s major objectives is to minimize disruptions to pedestrians, nearby residents, user groups, students at the elementary school as well as students at Sands Secondary, the city notes.

The parking lot is heavily used during school drop-off and pick-up times and, due to limited parking spaces, the use of the existing parking lot at Mackie Park for the field project will not be permitted.

For site access, it is envisioned that both contractors will access the site from 82nd Avenue utilizing the existing asphalt pathway along the east side of the fields, the city also notes.

Access to and from the adjacent field and baseball diamond, meanwhile, is to be always maintained, and the contractor is to coordinate with the city as required to accommodate user groups.

Replacing a gravel field, the $5 million project includes a full-size soccer pitch and a high school-rules football field. It also includes LED field lighting, perimeter fencing and walkway, bleachers, a below-grade drainage system and new field equipment.

The project is a partnership with the provincial government and Delta School District.

The city established a new reserve fund where the one-time grant of just over $16 million to Delta was directed for the second artificial turf field at Mackie Park as well as a major upgrade for the track at Delta Secondary (DSS) in Ladner. The DSS project is also well underway.

The Mackie Park project involved a land exchange between the city and school district.
