The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. Here are a selection of files for the past week:
*Sept. 13, 11:17 a.m., 8000 block 112 St.: The DPD Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit were conducting enforcement when they observed a commercial vehicle with a cracked windshield. The vehicle was stopped for the above noted offence. A mechanical inspection was conducted and police noted several defects including, but not limited to: an inoperative parking brake, inoperative hood latch, and a stone crack in the windshield. The driver was issued a Notice & Order Box 1, which resulted in the vehicle being removed from the roadway until it passes a complete mechanical vehicle inspection.
*Sept. 14, 4:48 p.m., 112th St. and 84th Ave: The owner of a local restaurant called the police to report a patron refusing to show their COVID vaccine passport in order to comply with the emergency program act requirements for accessing business and services. The owner of the business requested the customer leave and the patron was refusing. Prior to the arrival of police, the patron elected to be served via take-out and was gone when officers arrived.
*Sept. 13, 1:35 a.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: Police observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on the Alex Fraser Bridge. The police activated emergency equipment and pulled over the car. The lone occupant and driver was identified. Upon speaking with the driver, the police detected an odour of liquor in the vehicle. Police read the Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand and conducted the ASD testing. The driver failed the tests and was served a 90-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was towed at the owner’s expense.
*Sept. 16, 10 p.m., 8100 block Nordel Way: Police received a report of an erratic driver in the area. Officers located the suspect vehicle and identified the lone occupant. Suspicion was formed due to the odour of liquor and admission of consumption from the driver. An ASD demand was read. The ASD testing resulted in ‘warn’ readings which led to the seizure of the driver’s licence for three days. The vehicle was then towed and the driver of the car left in a taxi.
*Sept. 17, 6:30 p.m., 8100 block 120th St: Police received a report of a shoplifting in progress. The staff reported a banned female who was concealing items. Police attended the store and confronted the female. The product was recovered and the store was not interested in pursuing charges. The female shoplifter was released on the scene and no further action was required by police.
