The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
*April 5, 9:44 p.m., 7800 block 120th Street: Police conducted a routine license plate search of a nearby vehicle and found that the owner of the vehicle had an invalid drivers’ license. A traffic stop was initiated and police detected an odour of liquor emanating from the vehicle, but the driver denied consuming any alcohol. An Approved Screening Device demand was read and the driver provided two samples, both resulting in a “fail.” The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition as well as their vehicle being impounded.
*April 8, 11:04 a.m., 11100 block Highway 99: Police observed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed of 169 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone. Police conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver an excessive speeding ticket as well as a “fail to display N” violation ticket. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven-days.
*April 8th, 4:23 p.m., 11000 block 95th Avenue: Complainant reported that neighbours who were renting the residence were evicted two days ago and were just observed at the back of the house loading a truck full of items. Police attended and observed three individuals in a vehicle outside the residence. Police arrested the three individuals for break and enter. The investigation revealed that entry was made through the rear window and that various personal belongings, as well as a stove, were located in/on the truck. Police made contact with the owner of the property and explained the events and property within the truck. The owner was not interested in pursuing charges, however requested that all parties be informed they are not to return. All parties were released and provided appropriate advice.
*April 8, 6:06 p.m., 11000 block 87th Avenue: Multiple driving complaints were made regarding an elderly female operating a vehicle. Police located the driver pulling up to her residence and noticed the driver struggling with the turn signals and windshield wipers upon her driving into the garage. Police spoke to the driver who advised that her vehicle is new and she is having trouble with it. The driver indicated that the vehicle would pull to the left, which caused her to cross into the other lane. The driver also stated that she was having trouble seeing in her blind spots due to the mirror being nudged earlier. Police suggested that prior to driving she should make an appointment with the vehicle company to have the vehicle checked out if that was in fact an issue. Appropriate advice was provided regarding road safety.
*April 8, 11:29 p.m., 7000 block 120th Street: A loss prevention officer from a nearby store requested police assistance. The loss prevention officer had stopped a male for theft, but all the products were recovered and the male was released. The male then advised the loss prevention officer that he had left his car keys in the office but the loss prevention officer was unable to provide the keys to the male as per policy. Police attended and confirmed the car keys belonged to the male and his vehicle.
*April 10, 5:11 p.m., Highway 91, Highway 10 on ramp: Complainant reported a suspicious vehicle parked partially deep in the bushes, appearing as though someone was hiding in the back. Police attended the area and located the vehicle. Police met with the registered owner who was in the company of his child in the backseat. The owner indicated that he had pulled over as his child wanted water. Police provided appropriate advice to the owner regarding proper places to park to conduct such acts.
*April 10, 7:36 p.m., 11000 block 88th Avenue: Complainant called police to report that a female was in a nearby store, concealing various articles of clothing in bags and believed she was not going to pay for it. Police attended and observed the suspect leaving the store with the merchandise. The suspect was arrested, chartered and warned for theft. Police revealed that only clothing was taken from the store and after consultation with staff, charges were not going to be pursued. The merchandise was returned to the staff members. The female was released from custody and advised that she has been banned from the store and that further instances may result in charges.
