The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls Delta police responded to in the previous week:
*Dec. 7, 5:38 p.m., 7200 Blake Drive: Complainant called police to report what sounded like a single shot fired to the west in the trails behind his residence. Police attended and spoke to joggers in the area who reported hearing fireworks to the east. Police conducted area patrols of the trails to the east and to the west down to the train tracks. Nothing suspicious was found and there were no signs of anyone in distress. Police followed up with the complainant who reported the sound was a loud boom that shook the entire house and advised it has been an ongoing issue since October. Police believed the source of the noise was likely fireworks.
*Dec. 8, 10:07 p.m., 11500 86 Avenue: Complainant called police to report that his daughter’s online social media account had been hacked. The complainant stated that his daughter’s photos had been posted to her stories while she was at soccer practice. The daughter stated that she had received an automated email saying that another phone had accessed her account. Police advised the complaint and his daughter to change the social media account password, ensure all software updates had been completed, and to install an anti-virus app for the phone. The school liaison officer at the school the daughter attends was also advised.
*Dec. 9, 3 p.m., 10400 block Delsom Crescent: Complainant reported a delivered parcel containing children’s toys had been stolen from her residential front porch. The empty package was located near a wooded area at the end of the residential complex soaked from the rain. The online seller was contacted and stated that the package had been confirmed delivered. Police canvassed the area but did not find any video, witnesses or suspects. The online seller was working with the complainant to replace the items and police discussed alternate delivery methods for the future.
*Dec. 12, 6:38 p.m., Alex Fraser Bridge: Complainant reported a possible impaired driver travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the bridge before pulling a U-turn to go back south. The vehicle was reported heading back over the bridge into New West as police entered the area. Police followed up with the driver of the vehicle by phone where she admitted to driving in the area, and was lost, which was the reason for her erratic driving. While talking to the driver, police believed she did not present as impaired. The driver was given a strong verbal warning regarding her driving behaviour.
*Dec. 13, 11:42 a.m., 120th St 70th Avenue: Police were conducting proactive patrols with a focus on impaired enforcement when their attention was drawn to a vehicle leaving a liquor store. Police conducted a traffic stop to administer a sobriety check. The driver admitted to drinking two to three shots of vodka a few hours prior. An Approved Screening Device demand was read, resulting in a “warn”. A second test was administered, which also resulted in another “warn”. The driver was given a three-day driving prohibition and was picked up by a sober friend.
December 13th, 4:38 p.m., 9500 Dawson Cres: Complainant reported a mischief and advised police that a strand of Christmas lights outside her door had been cut. The complainant believed the damage occurred sometime during the previous two days. Police attended and observed the strands to have several cuts. Police discussed crime prevention through environmental design practices with the compliant to prevent future occurrences.
December 13th, 11:40 p.m., Nordel Way Alex Fraser Bridge: Complainant reported he had lost traction in his vehicle and spun out while merging onto the bridge. Police attended where the complainant was standing outside his vehicle which was facing the wrong way on the east side of the on ramp. There was no damage to side barrier and only minor damage observed to the vehicles side bumper. The vehicle was drivable and police blocked lanes while the complainant pulled a U-turn to head back northbound.
