Outdoor living

Patios and decks have evolved into versatile and elaborate spaces

As the temperature begins to warm and spring arises, many homeowners once again begin to think of enjoying the outdoors.

Spending a day or evening outside with family and friends enjoying the fresh air is a wonderful way to experience this change in season.

Outdoor living spaces are much more than just patios and decks. These spaces, which were once very simple and static, have evolved into elaborate and versatile living areas.

In our unpredictable climate, rain can often ruin a day outside so homeowners are more frequently looking for partially or fully covered patio areas. These spaces allow for enjoyment of the sun, but also provide shelter from the rain and wind.

This can extend the use of the patio into spring and fall where the temperature may be warm enough to sit outside but may also be wet enough to make it less enjoyable.

A cloudy or even rainy day should not be a reason to stay indoors, and with a properly designed outdoor space homeowners can enjoy the fresh air more often.

Upholstered furniture, area rugs, patio heaters and fireplaces are now commonly seen in outside spaces and allow for continued use throughout the year - not just in the few warmer, dry months that Vancouverites are accustomed to. Fireplaces or fire pits are a great way to allow bring warmth and character to an otherwise cold space.

These can be wood burning, but are more often natural gas which is much safer, cleaner, and easier to maintain.

Some municipalities also have restrictions on wood burning outdoors so be sure to check your local bylaws when making this decision.

Connecting indoor spaces such as kitchens, family rooms or dining room to spacious covered outdoor living areas can bring the feel of the outdoors inside and can drastically change the feel of a room.

The usable space can be increased substantially by expanding these rooms and can work well for entertaining or family gatherings.

This is a perfect example of how to effectively extend a living space - this is a home recently completed with My House Design/Build Team on Gambier Island.

It has a functional outdoor living space that allows for multiple uses - lounging, dining, and entertaining.

It appears to float high above the trees and extends the indoor living space with the inclusion of a 20-foot lift and slide door. This home was recently announced as a finalist for the 2012 GVHBA Ovation Awards Best Outdoor Living Space, and with this outdoor retreat it's easy to see why.
