More than 300 brave souls welcomed 2012 with a chilly dip in Boundary Bay during the 32nd annual Polar Bear Swim on New Year's Day.

About 1,500 people came out to Centennial Beach on an overcast afternoon to witness 355 registered swimmers take the plunge into five-degree water.

This year's winner was Eric Gaspard, who was last year's third place finisher.

The award for the participant who came from the farthest away went to Rex Marshall from Christchurch, New Zealand.

Marshall, 72, also won the oldest participant award and was presented with the John Mitchell Award by Mitchell's daughter, Sandy.

John Mitchell was a regular participant of the swim who passed away last year.
