More enhancements are coming for Diefenbaker Park.
Delta council has approved several additions, including shade structures and seating areas, as well as a memorandum of understanding with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen which has raised funds for the project.
The city previously partnered with the club for the water play park, which was completed in 2011, and a musical playground that opened in 2017.
A staff report to council notes the club last year requested another partnership to create sunshades and associated family gathering spaces in the park, primarily to support the use of the water play park.
The latest project would involve building the shade structures on the north side of the water play area.
“The placement of the proposed shade structures will provide an ideal location in terms of visibility for parents and guardians, as the water play area, washrooms, playground, musical play space and parking lot are all visible from the proposed project location,” the report notes.
According to the memorandum of understanding, the city will support the project by undertaking planning and implementation work, as well as conducting the associated purchasing.
“This commitment includes, but is not limited to, developing detailed designs that meet the approval of both Delta and the club, overseeing construction and installation of the amenities and associated features, and engagement of external expertise where required. Delta will also undertake all operational responsibilities once the amenities are in place,” the report adds.
The club estimated that supply and installation of four to five shade structures are expected to be $70,000, with an additional $10,000 allocated for project contingency.
The report notes the memorandum of understanding identifies that Delta and the club will each provide 50 per cent of the funding for the project.
The club has verified that it has $40,000 available to undertake the works identified this year.
