South Delta Crime Beat: Richmond youth banned from Mills Mall after caught with stolen goods

March 11, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A business reported that three males entered the store and selected several items valued at $400 and left without payment. Police attended but the males were gone on arrival. Mall security confirmed the males left the area in a grey SUV, unknown make, or model. The store provided still photos of the suspects which will be distributed for possible identification. 

March 11, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported that they placed a sofa bed for sale on Facebook Marketplace and was contacted by a person offering $580. A link was sent for the money transfer however, when the complainant clicked the link, the money was sent from the complainant’s bank account to the buyer.  Complainant in negotiations with the bank for reimbursement of the funds that were transferred fraudulently.

March 12, 5000 Block of Canoe Pass Way: A business reported that two male youths selected merchandise valued at $400 and left without payment. Police attended and located several youths associated with the suspects and determined they were students at a Richmond school. Police attended the school, and the two youths were identified. One youth returned a jacket valued at $334 and the other youth paid for sweatpants valued at $190. Both suspects received a one-year civil ban from the mall. 

March 14, 1100 Block of 54A Street: Complainant reported the theft of their vehicle. The vehicle was parked in the morning by the complainant with a full tank of gas. The complainant was able to account for all sets of keys. Canadian Border Services were contacted, and they advised the vehicle had travelled back and forth to Washington State in the afternoon. The vehicle was added to the Canadian Police Information Centre as stolen.

March 15, 5500 Block of 15B Avenue: Complainant reported that fishing gear was stolen from their vehicle. Police attended, and the complainant stated that sometime during the night, suspects entered the vehicle through the rear sliding window and stole a fishing vest with assorted tackle valued at $600. Investigation to continue with the receipt of surveillance video.

March 11, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported that an unknown person opened a Telus account in their name and charged $3,300, which had now gone to a collection agency. Police provided the complainant with a file number for the Telus investigation team to continue in assisting the complainant in retrieving their money. Police advised the complainant to contact Equifax and TransUnion. Telus to flag the complainant’s account for any future fraudulent activity. 

March 11, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported that they had clicked on a Microsoft popup on their laptop and subsequently spoke with someone over the phone who requested $3,000 to fix the laptop. The complainant sent the funds, but the next day successfully stopped the transfer. Police advised the complainant to never respond to a popup or transfer funds to unknown callers, text messages, or emails.

March 12, Headquarters, 4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant reported that they received a phone call from a person claiming to be Rogers’s and requesting the complainant’s account details. The complainant complied and provided the information.  Subsequently, they received an email confirming they had purchased an iPhone 15. The cell phone provider was contacted and confirmed the transaction to be fraudulent. No monetary loss. 

March 17, 5900 Block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police stopped a vehicle, which made an unsafe left turn. An odour of alcohol was detected on the driver who provided two breath samples with both reading fail. As a result, the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
