The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest.

Here is a snapshot of some of this week’s files:
Feb. 17, 12:40 a.m., 1600 block of Enderby Avenue: Police were dispatched to a reported suspicious person after a resident observed someone looking into vehicles. Police located the individual, who claimed they were lost and trying to walk to Scott Road. The individual left the area in a taxi after speaking to police, who did not have a confirmed offence.
Feb. 17, 3.35 p.m., 500 block of 16 Avenue: Police were dispatched to a reported medical request for an unresponsive person. Police and EHS found them to be grossly impaired, but suffering from several concurrent mental health issues. Police apprehended the individual under Sec. 28 of the Mental Health Act, and transported them to hospital to receive the medical care they needed.
Feb. 17, 6:51 p.m., location withheld: While attending a residence to investigate a shoplifting file, police queries of the suspect found them wanted on an outstanding DNA warrant. Police subsequently arrested the wanted party and transported them to police headquarters for forensics processing.
Feb. 18, 10:48 p.m., 2200 block of 56 Street: Police conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety. After confirming the driver’s identity, police read them the Approved Screening Device (ASD) Demand, which resulted in a “FAIL” reading. Police subsequently issued the driver a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) from driving, and mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment notice.
Feb. 19, 01:21 a.m., 5000 block of Calvert Drive: Police were dispatched to a reported interrupted theft from auto after a resident found an unknown male (Caucasian, 20 years old, 5’ 10” tall, slim build, wearing all black) in their vehicle parked in the driveway. The suspect fled prior to police being called, and no CCTV footage was available.
Feb. 20, 11:38 p.m., 8000 block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed (132 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone). After confirming the driver’s identification, police subsequently issued them a violation ticket for excessive speed, an infraction that includes a mandatory seven-day vehicle impoundment.
Feb. 17, 06:12 a.m., 4700 block of Kirkland Road: Police were dispatched to a possible impaired driver who had crashed their vehicle into a ditch. Police located the vehicle and driver, who was exhibiting signs of gross impairment, and successfully identified and arrested them. Police issued them a driving prohibition and, while speaking with police, the driver admitted to drug use prior to driving. Police subsequently read them the Drug Recognition Expert Demand and transported them to police headquarters to complete the evaluation.
