If you’re out celebrating this summer keep in mind not to extend that to behind the wheel because Delta police are on the lookout for boozed up drivers.

Delta Police Department launched its summer CounterAttack program June 15 and with that, will be setting up roadblocks at strategic locations, from now until August.

“Sometimes we’ll let you know when we’re doing it and sometimes, we won’t,” said A/ Insp. James Sandberg.

Police will be set up roadblocks once or twice a week and focus on the busy times when people are out.

In May, police busted 54 impaired drivers, with most of those receiving 90-day driving prohibitions.

That’s a few less than the recent average monthly tally of about 60 impaired drivers, added Sandberg.

In addition to not being able to drive, most motorists’ cars were towed and stowed for 30 days, with all bills payable by the driver, in addition to fines of up to $4,060, a possible driver-risk premium and the charges required to get a new driver’s licence, which is required after a 90-day ban.

“It adds up pretty quickly,” said Sandberg.

Truck inspections

Last week, police also joined in with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement and inspected trucks throughout Delta, including Delta Port, as well as in New Westminster.

Photos from that event showed a suspension component of a big truck completely rusted through, as well a tire on a truck with a gash in the sidewall.

Police are still counting the number of tickets and penalties issued during the June 19 to 20 event.
