The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in North Delta and other files of interest.
*Dec. 4, 118th Street & 72A Avenue: Police stopped a vehicle with a broken taillight. On suspicion of alcohol consumption, breath samples were requested. The two samples provided both read ‘fail.’ As a result, the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver transported to their residence by police.
*Dec. 6, Public Safety Building, 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported that on checking their credit with Equifax, they found a charge of $3,000 to a Rogers account they did not create. The complainant spoke to their bank, who flagged their account for any further fraudulent activity. Police provided the complainant with a file number for dispute purposes and advised the complainant to inform the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. No money was lost by the complainant.
*Dec. 8, 7700 Block of 116th Street: Complainant reported the theft sometime overnight of the catalytic converter from their vehicle parked in their driveway. There was no surveillance video or suspects. A police file number was provided to the complainant for insurance purposes.
*Dec. 8, Public Safety Building 11375 84th Avenue: Complainant reported that their email, and social media accounts had been hacked by unknown persons. The hacker was now demanding $500 in Bitcoin otherwise the complainant’s personal information would be shared with their on-line contacts. The complainant has frozen their bank accounts and changed passwords. Also, social media and email were deleted. No funds were removed from the complainant’s accounts.
*Dec. 10, 8900 Block of 120th Street: During a proactive patrol, police stopped a vehicle failing to maintain its lane. While speaker with the driver, the officer detected a strong odour of liquor. The suspect refused to provide the officer with two breath samples as requested. The officer explained the jeopardy of refusing to provide breath samples and as a result, the driver was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the driver left the area with a friend.
*Dec. 10, 11600 Block of 86th Avenue: Complainant reported that they were clearing the snow from their daughter’s car when they discovered the rear window smashed. Police attended and determined the vehicle had been vandalized. A search of the area by police for surveillance video proved negative, and the complainant was provided with a file number for insurance purposes.
*Dec. 10, 10300 Block of Nordel Court: During a proactive patrol in the area, police located a cut fence entering the property of a business. In the compound, police found a trailer that had been entered and rummaged through. The trailer appeared to be full of donated clothing. Police checked the rest of the yard, but did not locate any further trailers that had been entered.
