Let’s take a trip back to October 1976 when a new sports editor joined the Delta Optimist’s staff.

Elliott Pap replaced Mike Gasher, who was moving on after a 19-month stint in the position.

In his first column, Pap said he had some big shoes to fill (size 12 to be exact) and his first bit of business would be snooping around local locker rooms to see what he could find.

Pap would go on to join the Vancouver Sun in 1978, having a colourful career writing sports including following the Canucks. He called it a career in 2015.

Also having a distinguished career, Gasher wrote for other publications in a variety of roles over the coming decades. He was also a professor of journalism.

He passed away in September 2022.

Others filled the sports editor role until Mark Booth got the job in the 1980s, wrapping up his outstanding and lengthy career in 2023.
