Nearly 30 firefighters are on scene at a massive fire at a recycling plant in north Richmond Saturday.
Smoke from the fire is visible from as far away as the North Shore.
The call for the two-alarm fire came in around 7:20 p.m. Saturday evening, and 29 firefighters are on scene, said Clay Adams, City of Richmond spokesperson.
The fire broke out at a recycling plant near Knox Way and Savage Road. The area is close to River Road between No. 6 and No. 7 roads.
The facility recycles plastic, which is collected into bales, making it challenging to fight the fire, according to Adams.
The name of the facility where the fire has broken out has not been confirmed at this time. The cause of the fire is unknown.
As of about 9:30 p.m., the bales – located outside of the building – were being extinguished, and crews were entering the building to put out small fires within the structure, Adams told the Richmond News.
Adams added that Richmond Fire-Rescue will soon start working with heavy equipment to separate the non-burning plastic bales from the burning ones, to remove “additional fire load.”
There are currently no injuries to firefighters or the public, said Adams.
