'06 Junior Giants overcome slow start to capture BC May Madness tourney

The South Delta-based '06 Junior Giants spring hockey team captured the gold medal at the B.C. May Madness Tournament, held May 8-10 in Vancouver.

The South Delta-based '06 Junior Giants spring hockey team captured the gold medal at the B.C. May Madness Tournament, held May 8-10 in Vancouver.

The Junior Giants opened their schedule with a pair of close losses - 3-1 to the Coquitlam Crunch and 3-2 to the B.C. Blackhawks.

On day two, the team bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Junior Blazers and an 8-0 triumph against the Nanaimo Snipers to move on to the semi-finals.

The Junior Giants played a fantastic semi-final game, winning 5-1 against the B.C. Blackhawks to move on to the gold medal game against the Vancouver Warriors, who were undefeated in the tournament. The championship tilt was well-played, with plenty of end-to-end hockey. The teams were tied 5-5 after regulation which sent the game into overtime.

The locals killed off a penalty then carried the play for most of the frame which paid off with the game winning goal coming from Wylder Lappin as time expired to secure a 6-5 win and the 2015 BC May Madness championship.

The ' 06 Jr Giants are having a great spring season having also won a silver medal in the Chilliwack Junior Chiefs Spring Kickoff Tournament in early April.

The team will continue to train for the next few weeks and conclude the spring hockey season at the B.C. Spring Classic Tournament June 5-7. Members of the '06 Jr Giants include: Keegan McCoy, Ella Hewitt, Logan Meyer, Isaac Zed, Hayden Clisby, Mitchel Brind,

Dylan Heer, Cameron Trolland, Rylan Weisbrod, Will Sharpe, Wylder Lappin, Nicolas Streit, Dayne Nielsen, Evan Barritt, Kai McComb.

The coaching staff features Peter Zed (head coach), Cyle Lappin (assistant coach) and Peter Heer (manager/assistant coach).
