Delta Force Athletics thriving in hoops and more

Community based club designed for young multi-sport athletes

The rapidly growing Delta Force Athletics is thriving on the basketball court and beyond.

It was a year ago the club was launched to promote and allow young athletes from Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta opportunities to compete at a higher level and develop their game.

Two basketball teams were formed for the inaugural campaign and that number swelled to seven for the recent spring season, competing in league and tournament play against some of the best competition in the Lower Mainland.

Delta Force Athletics was started by longtime Ladner resident and Delta Secondary graduate Jas Hothi, who has coached in all levels of soccer and basketball in the community before launching the club.

“We are such a small community and I am a big believer in working together and providing kids with opportunities,”said Hothi. “I respect and admire the work all our local clubs and volunteers are doing with the youth. Instead of competing with them at that level, we offer programs for kids to be multi-sport athletes rather than early specialization in one particular sport. This allows our young athletes to play other sports within the community.”

The popular basketball program focuses on developing the skill set of the players to be successful at higher levels and then apply them when they play for their respective high school teams.

The DFA fall schedule is comprised mainly of basketball programs for U11- U17 athletes.

After a successful spring season where several teams won their respective tournaments, planning has already started to give more opportunities over the fall and the 2019 spring campaigns, including trips to events in the U.S.

In the spring, DFA also offers 5v5 flag football, and track and field training.

All sessions, regardless of the sport, conclude with 30 minutes of speed and strength training.

“Another key mission of the club is to make the training affordable,”added Hothi. “While programs such as this cost a substantial amount of money within the region, DFA has developed relationships  with local sponsors to ensure fees are kept low and allow athletes to join and participate in these programs.”
