Dolphin swimmers show their versatility in decathlon meet

The versatility and athleticism of Winskill Dolphins swimmers were put to the test at their first competition of the 2011-2012 season last weekend - the VPSC Invitational and Sprint Decathlon.

The versatility and athleticism of Winskill Dolphins swimmers were put to the test at their first competition of the 2011-2012 season last weekend - the VPSC Invitational and Sprint Decathlon.

Held at UBC Aquatic Center, 450 plus athletes from 15 teams participated in this gruelling 10-event meet. In the end, competitors were ranked according to their total time across all 10 races, and prizes were awarded to the swimmers who accumulated the fastest times. WDSC swimmers were quick to seize the racing opportunity, making some big waves in the process.

Tai Long Singh (11) and Paul Zou (12) both finished first overall.

Singh had six meet records, including the 100 and 50 metre backstroke; 50m fly; and the 200, 100, and 50m free.

Joshua Yeo (9), Sarah Yeo (14), and Sidney Peake (15) each claimed second overall in their respective age categories. Other results included Aleckxeis Aficionado (13) and Markus Thormeyer (14) both earning prizes for their seventh place standings.

Thormeyer broke his own club record in the boys 13-14 100 individual medley with a 1: 07.17 clocking. Not to be left off the books, NuNu Singh (14) picked up her own meet record in the 50 back with a time of 30.64 seconds.

In her first season at Winskill, Kiersten Gilberg (14) made an impressive debut by qualifying for theAge Group National Championships in Calgary and Western National Championships in Winnipeg with a best time performance in the 50 breaststroke.

Five Dolphins enjoyed a perfect weekend with 100 percent personal best performances over the 10 events including: Joshua Baerg, Markus Thormeyer, Paul Zou, and Tai Long Singh.

"It's so early, we're not taking anything for granted," said Winskill head coach Ben Keast. "Still, the swimmers excelled in their toughness and intensity over a huge spread of races - different strokes and distances - and that certainly makes for an exciting kick-off to the season."
